The Alternative is to Tackle Credit Repair Yourself:

Here’s the entire process broken down into steps:

  • The first thing you’ll need to do is dispute any item that seems questionable in your credit report. If you can’t identify the disputable item, then just dispute the results or the information provided.
  • If your disputable item has been verified, get your hands on a copy of the credit report and get in touch with the credit bureau. Once you call the bureau, find out whether the item was verified according to the instructions mentioned in FCRA Section 611 (a) (7). If they did not, you can carry the dispute further.
  • Generally, credit bureaus rely on online software to carry out the verification process. The entire process is automated, which means there is a small chance for error. However, credit bureaus are likely not to offer you any evidence as to whether or not they actually called the creditor to verify the disputed item. In that case, it is best to call the creditor yourself.
  • Once you call the creditor, ask them for the original records. If they can’t provide you with one, call back the credit bureau and provide the name of the representative you just spoke to. Also, give them the creditor’s number and tell them that your creditor has no records. At this point, you can start another dispute.
  • Your creditor might tell you that the records are with the collection agency. In that case, call the collection agency. If you do manage to get the records, look for the disputed item. If the original records prove that the item on the credit report is inaccurate, call the credit bureau and open a third dispute. Use your records to assist the dispute process.
  • The credit bureau cannot include unverified or disputable items for a period of more than 7 years. If they do, they are violating FCRPA rules. If this happens, you are entitled to receive $1000 in damage coverage plus legal expenses. Delinquent debts should not be included in your credit report once the statute of limitations has crossed the timeframe.

So, this is how the entire credit repair process works. Doesn’t it sound simple? Well, it obviously doesn’t. In fact, this is the edited version. In reality, don’t expect credit bureaus or creditors to respond right away. Carrying out a credit repair by yourself is time consuming and can be quite ineffective.
